Elves

Elves, sometimes called the fair folk because of their unsurpassed grace, are perhaps the most admired of all races in Alagaësia. They are very skilled in magic and in weaponry.

Elves are said to have come to Alagaësia thousands of years ago, from the land Alalea, whose nature and location are known only to the elves. They arrived on their silver ships, and initially thought of dragons as mere beasts, not the intelligent creatures they truly are. Bloodshed started when one foolish Elf hunted and killed a dragon. The dragons of the land were outraged and killed the Elf responsible. However, they did not stop there; the dragons went on to wage war on all of the Elven nation. Though elves wished to put an end to the animosity, they had no method of communication with the dragons. Bloodshed continued for five years until an elf by the name of Eragon found a dragon egg, abandoned for whatever reason. He raised the dragon and christened it Bid'Daum. Together, elf and dragon traveled the land and brought peace in their wake, encouraging the forging of treaties. From this friendship came the birth of the Riders.

Along with their magical and physical abilities, elves also have the ability to slow death by putting themselves in a trance-like state, during which they appear to be unconscious. This was used by the elf Arya when she was poisoned, so as to slow its deadly effects.

Elves live in the Du Weldenvarden Forest, their center located in Ellesmèra. They are ruled over by Queen Islanzadi. Those who are regarded and trusted as elf-friends may be given the yawë, a bond of trust, usually in the form of a ring. Arya has a yawë tattoo on her shoulder.

I might add, to those of you who think that Elves are a "Tolkienism", that Elves, like orcs, are a large part of most mythologies.
