October 31th, 2004 Alagaësia Newsletter

Kvetha fricäya. . . . Greetings friends.

Late last month, we looked outside and saw a moose walking down our gravel driveway, through our gardens and yard, and down to the Yellowstone River. It was a great big beast, shaggy at the shoulders, with black hooves and velvet antlers. Quite a sight.

Well, I went to Comic-Con in San Diego, which was a very enjoyable—if overwhelming—experience. It’s impossible to convey through words just how much was going on at this event. Everywhere you looked you saw something different, from statues of the Alien to video games to hot dog vendors to people dressed as dwarves, hobbits, Wonder Woman, Borg, Klingons, manga characters, Star Wars characters, and much, much more. . . . I mean, they had a full-sized X-Wing fighter ship in the Star Wars section!

One of the most exciting aspects of the trip was meeting many of the authors I grew up reading and admiring, such as Terry Brooks, Raymond E. Feist, Steven Barnes, Timothy Zahn, and Peter David, as well as China Miéville, Margaret Weis, Greg Keys, Greg Bear, and others. They were all incredibly nice to me, especially Terry Brooks, who really goes above and beyond the call of duty to help new authors. What a guy!

Another exciting aspect was getting to meet the wonderful fans who came to hear my talks and have their copies of Eragon signed—many of whom I know read this newsletter! Thank you all. I couldn’t have asked for a more enthusiastic response. After I did my first signing, I had a delightful interview with a staff member from Shurtugal.com. You can read the interview here.

Also, many thanks to Colleen Lindsay and the others at Del Rey who helped make this such a wonderful trip for my dad and me. It was a true pleasure, and I look forward to doing it again next year.

The foreign editions of Eragon continue to pour in. I just saw the Korean edition, which uses the same cover art, but splits the book into two glossy softcover volumes. I can’t give you the first line as I did before because the book is written in characters and I have no idea how to type them into the computer.

That’s it for now. I must return to Eldest. As always, take care, all the best, and . . .

May your swords stay sharp,
Christopher Paolini
