ELDEST, THE MOVIE

With the release of Eragon, The Movie on DVD this past week I’ve been thinking about the next book and how they will translate it onto the big screen.  Having purchased the 2-disk special edition of Eragon, I was able to see what they had cut out and in my opinion…should have left in the movie.

Some of the major characters that people, including myself, have whined about not seeing in the Eragon movie were in those deleted scenes.  We can see Katrina; baby Elva and the Twins mainly.  This is really disappointing, because now that I can see that Fox had actually taken the time to shoot those scenes, with those pivotal characters, it seems insane to me that they would leave them on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

Let me go on to the point of this editorial…the next movie.  You can tell from what made it to the screen in the first movie with additional hints from the deleted scenes as to some of the paths they will and won’t be taking with the Eldest movie.  As an example…Roran left because he is “old enough to be recruited” and “won’t fight for the king”…everyone knows this from what made the national release of the movie.  But what we can add from the deleted scenes is that Katrina leaves with him.  It also appears that Sloan has “bought it” from the Razac when being questioned about the stone/egg and Eragon, so to me anyway…it looks like they are abandoning the whole Roran/Stronghammer storyline.  Maybe we will find Roran and Katrina settled somewhere along the path of the Varden moving to Surda and somehow Roran finds out about Eragon and the king finds out about Roran being Eragon’s cousin and kidnaps Katrina…something along those lines.  But other than that…I’m at a loss to know where Fox intends to go with this storyline…because it leads directly into book 3…so it can’t be denied…it has to be addressed.  But the whole Roran becoming a leader and the conflict within him about killing…all of that seems not to be included in the next movie.

I know some people have said that the Razac are dead, so now what’s going to happen…well, you’re mixing up the book facts and the movie facts.  In the book we know that there are only 2 because that’s what CP has said, but the movie has made no such claim.  In fact you see Durza call up the Razac from the depths of hell I would assume to go after Eragon and Brom.  So yes those 2 are no longer with us…but who’s to say if Galbatorix can or can’t call more of them forward.

Let me talk about a claim that was made in the movie that has really troubled me, because I’ve looked and I can’t find this claim in the books.  They have Brom say that “if you kill a dragon, his rider will live on, but if you kill a rider”, and Saphira finishes with “his dragon will die too”…not word for word, but you get the point.  And then Durza repeats something about a rider hearing the dying screams of his dragon as he takes his last breath.  But as I said, I can’t find this claim in the books…maybe somebody can help me here because I think this is pretty significant.  Because Galbatorix’s dragon died then he stole his current dragon from another rider by killing that rider…right?  So then where did Fox get this idea?

I just took the long way around getting to my point…(just trying to show how different details exist between the book and the movie), they will not be addressing the fact that Galbatorix stole this dragon…they can’t, it contradicts something they stated in the first movie about killing a rider and his dragon not living on.

They don’t seem to want to address the conflict within Arya about falling for Eragon…hey – it works for me.  I want them to end up together anyway, but it doesn’t appear that they want to show any hesitancy on Arya’s part with having feelings for Eragon.  If CP does decide not to let them happen in book 3 (Please don’t do that to me CP)…they may have painted themselves into a corner.  But not yet.  At this point, you can tell that they are attracted to each other, nothing more.

There are some other things though that I don’t know how they will get around.  How do we get Murtagh kidnapped by the Twins and taken to Galbatorix so that he can be the next rider when the only place the Twins exist currently is in out-takes?  It’s the twins that discover that Eragon and Murtagh are brothers, so you’ll still have to have someone with their abilities working with the king to accomplish this, so I’m not sure how this one will work itself out.  And how do you get Eragon to Ellesmera to train with Master Oromis when Arya has already left without him?  What about the gift of dragons?  That is pretty significant I would say, and yet you barely notice that Eragon was cut across the back by Durza during their fight. His daily duels with Vanir are absolutely important to Eragon’s development as a leader.  But Eragon hasn’t left for Ellesmera with Arya….big holes in the storyline Fox…big holes

It is a lot of details and you have to cut it down to create a reasonable length movie, yes, I understand that.  But really, the first movie was so short by resent standards; I think we could do with alittle more content while maintaining quality to create a movie that will stand the test of time.  I did like the first move…maybe you don’t understand that by how much I’m critiquing it…but I can still like something and have a view about how I think it could be improved upon.

Being the good little Inheritance fan that I am, I’ve been working on how I would address these issues to ensure that pertinent facts are contained in the next movie and that there is a smooth transition between the movies while maintaining the continuity of the books, it would be nice to work with the screenwriter on Eldest, but alas…this is my outlet. So I guess I do it for my own enjoyment at this point.

Here are just a few of the new characters that I think must be introduced in the next movie:

  1. Master Oromis
  2. Glaedr
  3. the Twins
  4. Elva
  5. Vanir
  6. Blagden
  7. Solebum
  8. Orik
  9. Islanzadi
  10. Rhunon
  11. King Orrin
  12. Trianna / Du Vrangr Gata

Naturally if they were going to include the Roran/Stronghammer storyline that list would be longer…but as I said, I think it’s out.

Before I leave you today…I’d like to make a personal request if I could…first, I want to thank all of you who take the time to write to me and ask questions.  I feel honored by your comments and trust in my opinions.  I’m overwhelmed by the love that I feel in those emails…and trust me I do read them all.  I have some that are printed out and I carry them with me always until I figure out how to answer whatever question has been asked of me.  And just so you know…you don’t have to agree with me to write to me.  I have gotten my fair share of emails from those of you who don’t think I know what I’m talking about…but it’s all good…I enjoy reading those as well.

And I am sorry that it’s been awhile between stories, I’ll try to do better.  I have 2 others editorials that I’m currently working on, but this one just sorta wrote itself out today.

As for my request…could you please tell me where you’re writing from?  I don’t mean your address or anything like that.  But what country or state you’re from.  I just find it interesting to hear where you all are from…I’m just nosey, what can I say.
